The Zeta Reticuli system

Greys

Observation and boundaries

Greys work with knowledge, genetics and the mysteries of biological life. Encounters with them open the structures of time and extremely precise telepathic transmission.

The Zeta Reticuli system

Opening of contact. In September 1961 Betty and Barney Hill encountered a craft and its crew while driving home across New Hampshire. Hours were missing from the journey, and the details returned only later. Betty drew from memory a star map she had been shown: dots and lines, no names and no scale. Years afterwards an Ohio schoolteacher, Marjorie Fish, built a three-dimensional model of the nearby stars out of beads and thread in her living room and searched patiently for the angle from which the pattern would look the same. She arrived at Zeta Reticuli. The whole episode is Grey contact in miniature: the information was handed over without explanation, and the understanding was left as human work.

The nation's home world. Zeta Reticuli is a binary in the southern sky some 39 light years away, two Sun-like stars orbiting each other at a great distance. Different Grey groups may hold several worlds in the system, and no established name has been conveyed for one shared home planet. The name and the address are both ours. The Greys have never said what they call themselves; we named them after a colour and placed them on a map that somebody else drew from memory.

How does this nation appear? Greys are met aboard craft, in periods of missing time, in bedrooms and in precisely ordered rooms. They communicate telepathically, work in small groups and turn attention toward biology, star maps and the structures of life. They do not introduce themselves, do not explain and do not say goodbye: the work begins and ends without a frame. Most experiencers nevertheless remember one being that stops and looks longer than the task would require. That is the part of the encounter that stays for years.

Its mission beside humanity. The work of the Greys is observation, and their teaching is the discipline of observing: look at the detail without covering it with a wish. This is uncomfortable, because people conduct almost all of their looking through a wish. The other half of the teaching concerns the boundary. A Grey encounter does not ask permission, and so it forces the experiencer to define for themselves where their own boundary runs and what they intend to say about it. No gentler contact puts that question quite so directly.

How does contact open? Contact may appear as an unusual silence, a change in the experience of time, a dreamlike state of alertness or an extremely dense telepathic transmission. The experience resembles a data transfer more than a conversation. Conversation does not come easily either, because the other party feels no need whatsoever to fill a pause. The silence is not rejection but efficiency.

How can its presence be recognised? Large dark eyes, silver-grey light, geometric spaces and complete soundlessness are their signs. The most precise mark, however, is the absence of feeling. Grey presence holds no warmth and no threat, only precision; the emotions arrive afterwards and belong to the experiencer. Memory unpacks itself in layers, and a detail that was not there yesterday is in place tomorrow. Betty Hill's map was the first example of this: dots that waited a decade before anyone knew how to look at them properly.
